This city guards its river with a wall
in hopes that all the wandering hearts won't fall
But a wall will not dissuade them, no,
they'll find another way to make it to the shore

Tonight, right here, I sit pretending not to see
that my heart is sitting at the bar right next to me
Oh, I cannot remember when it was I saw it last,
without a heart to tick, the time slips by so fast

This city tries to keep our hearts out of the river,
it kindly prefers they slowly wither
Well my poor heart is sitting before it's fifth whiskey
and my poor heart is drunker than a heart should ever be

What's worse, I think I know whose on its other side,
I asked him if I'd left it there, I guess he must've lied
I'm beginning to consider it a possibility
that I didn't lose my heart, but it deliberately lost me

You can't talk a heart down from a wall,
No, there's nothing on this earth can save a heart from such a fall
I can't look away even as I feel my hollow shiver,
all I can do is pray that my heart won't make it to the river
